Eye twitching also referred to as myokymia, is the involuntary spasm of eyelid muscles in repetition. The twitching usually occurs in the upper eyelid, but can also happen in the lower eyelid. Eye twitches are mildly gentle and pose no harm.

Various cultures across the world associate eye twitching with several superstitions. Each culture has its interpretation of the twitch superstition. Left and/or right eye twitching superstitions are believed to indicate cheerful or worrying thoughts. Eye twitching is associated with both superstitious and non-superstitious causes.

Non-Superstitious Causes

Below are potential scientific reasons behind eye twitches;

  • Not getting enough sleep

A sleep-deprived person has heavy, tired eyes, which twitch regularly.

  • An eye infection

An infected eye works harder than usual and strains more, thus the twitching may occur.

  • Eye nerve damage

A damaged nerve is caused by an exhausted brain, which delays body signals. This usually causes left eye twitching to be more recurrent.

  • Emotional imbalance

This includes mood swings and sudden irritancy. Imbalances in your emotional composition can bring out reactions, such as eye twitching.

Superstition Causes

Twitching as superstitions are understood differently in different parts of the world. This is mainly due to varying cultural and traditional practices in these regions. Popular superstitions include:

1. Chinese superstitions

The left and right eye twitching superstition in China is based on the time of day when the twitch occurs. Examples include:

  • 11pm-1am

A left eye twitch indicates a visit from a nobleman, while the right eye twitch symbolizes an invitation to a celebration.

  • 3am-5am

The left eye twitch is a sign of a guest from a foreign kingdom, while the right eye twitch indicates that a right occasion is going to happen soon.

  • 7am-9am

Left eye twitching at this time of the day symbolizes a visit from a far-off friend. The right eye twitching is a sign of the loss of a valuable item or injury to oneself.

  • 1pm-3pm

The left eye twitch is a sign of incoming money, whereas the right eye twitch is a sign that something is about to happen in your life.

2. Indians' superstitions

The Indians' superstitions depend on gender.

Right eye twitching in men symbolizes good fortune, while that of the left eye is a bad omen. Among women, on the other hand, twitching of the left eye indicates good news, whereas right eye twitching is a warning against bad news or a bad omen.

The Indians also have superstitions centered on the twitching part of the eye. A twitch on the upper eyelid is a signal of bad news, twitching of the eye pupil is an indication of good fortune, and if the left eyebrow twitches, good tidings and the birth of a baby are to happen.

3. Africa superstitions

Two major countries in Africa have eye twitch superstitions. They include Cameroon and Nigeria.

  • The Cameroonians

A twitch on your upper lid (either of the eyes) is a symbol for an unexpected guest. They also believe that when the lower lid twitches, one is about to cry.

  • The Nigerians

Left eye twitching is generally considered to be a signal of bad luck in the form of unhappiness or death.

  • Hawaii superstition

The Hawaiians have three major superstitions. The left eye twitch signifies that a stranger will soon visit.

Repetitive twitching of the left eye is believed to be a bad omen, a sign of the death of a family member. Twitching of the right eye is a sign of childbirth in the family.

How to Handle Eye Twitching

Eyelid spasms are harmless, unpredictable and happen for a short period. This makes it easy for one to resolve the twitching without the need for medical treatment. Eyelid twitches accompanied by symptoms such as drooping upper eyelids, facial spasms, and continuous twitching for an extended period, are an indication of a critical disorder, and one should seek urgent medical attention. To reduce eye twitching, it is imperative to try the following:

  • Get adequate sleep

Sufficient sleep (7-8 hours) keeps your eyelids relaxed the next day, hence less eye twitching.

  • Drink less caffeine

A reduced intake of caffeine is very necessary. Caffeine is a stimulant that suppresses the body's need for sleep. The right amount of sleep is required for a healthy functioning body.

  • Proper warm/cold compress

When the eye twitching begins, it is advisable to try some homemade remedies, such as a warm cloth rub or applying cucumber slices. The application of cucumber slices will hydrate the eyelids and cause relaxation, hence the twitching will reduce.

  • Use of eye drops

Use of prescribed teardrops or artificial tears will ensure that the eyes are always lubricated. This is necessary especially for one with dry eyes.

Conclusion

Though not a serious ailment, involuntary muscle spasms of the eyelids can be quite irritating. The condition generally is a result of fatigue, an emotional imbalance, or eye infections. Continuous left eye twitching necessitates consultation with a doctor for medical treatment. However, regular washing of the eyes and adequate sleep alleviates strain on the eyes and reduces eye twitching.
